The Smoking Gu… err… Art

(Note: What follows are images that are virtually guaranteed to offend many people. They are depicted here for informational and discussion purposes. Please use your own judgement )

Questions of the day:

  • Is this…
A cartoon drawing of the prophet Muhammed with a bomb-like turban, including lit fuse
…any more or less offensive than this…
A photograph of a Crucifix submerged in urine
  • Are either one of them worth violence?
  • Rioting?
  • Death Threats?
  • Do you know which one of these two has inspired all of those things?
  • Can you guess which one inspired none of those things?
  • Do those extremely different reactions to Blasphemy indicate anything about the religions or cultures involved?

Update 6 Feb 2006: I only show one of several of the offending drawings above. Michelle Malkin has all of them on here site. Also I have read an as-yet-completely-unconfirmed rumor that some of the Imams are getting their followers riled up by showing these cartoons along with several that were never published, that are more actively offensive, such as Mohammad with a pig snout, or a praying Muslim being molested by a dog. Sounds like a move straight out of the American Democrat playbook — if reality doesn’t motivate the faithful enough, make stuff up that will.

I don’t think they would take the high road and say… ” we find this cartoons offensive and as a result will not approve of the them” end of story.

Instead you have rioting and burning of buildings, but you would have the same in the west 500 years ago with the Christ in the bottle.

I think the only way to solve this would be to mass media images like this until they have no more impact… just like cartoons in the U.S. showing Bush as a Jack Ass. It may take a couple hundred years but is the rest of the world expected to walk on eggshells hoping not to offend?

Thanks for showing this cartoon…I can now see why the Muslims are up in arms.

I love the way intolerant people demand tolerance from others. Just goes to show – as you point out very well – that this so-called peaceful “religeon” is losing its way.

I wonder what Muhammed would say to his followers if he saw them destroying the property of, and killing, other people simply because they disagreed on something.

As to Juan’s note, I would only say that Islam has been around as long as, or longer than, Christianity; if Islam hasn’t grown beyond violence toward those who don’t subscribe to its tenets in 500 years, I suggest that it may be time for its radical followers to admit that they have nothing in common with Muhammed and are simply terrorists looking for an excuse to destroy and kill.
