“Jane, stop this crazy thing!”

Plugging away at a significant update to my pull-quote plugin. Unfortunately WordPress 2.1, which was just released, seems to completely break the buttons in the Post editor. I’ve been trying to fix the issue, which in itself seems to be taking this from “significant” to “major” update status….

Found a pseudo-tutorial telling me how to make custom buttons in WP 2.1, and followed the procedure diligently. Let’s just say it’s a good thing I test these things on my computer, because it appears that running it on the live web server would have brought that sucker to its knees. My laptop I tested on started churning processor like there’s no tomorrow. It took 20 or so minutes just to quit programs and get the thing to reboot without just pulling the plug, and it was only after the reboot and a bit of checking that I discovered that the new code is somehow spawning a couple dozen highly intensive httpd processes every time I so much as look at the admin panel.

So know I get to go over the new stuff with a fine-toothed comb and try to figure out what part of the code is causing the problem. This is my biggest priority at the moment, though if it takes too long I may go in and release a no-buttons 1.4 branch that has the much-requested user control over which side a particular pull-quote is displayed on. Ultimately I would like to get both these things working and have one release that covers both issues, but the edit-post buttons may take some time.

*sigh* Back to the drawing board. Stay tuned.

Thanks very much for all your hard work! I really love this plug-in, and I’m looking forward to the new release.

This problem and a few other things (buying a house, selling a condo, and throwing my annual Mardi Gras party!) have had priority in the last couple weeks — hopefully things will slow down just a bit and I’ll have some free time to get the next version out the door.

The update to the above is this: it appears that the next release will remove the buttons from the Rich-text (WYSIWYG) editor entirely, as 1) it’s a difficult thing to get working in WP 2.1, and 2) it appears that the fine folks working on the next release of WordPress are going to include official hooks in WP 2.2 for adding buttons to the Rich Text editor. No need duplicating their effort when an Official solution is on its way!

So for now you can always add the <span>s manually, or use the button in the HTML editor. I’ll be focusing on other enhancements for the time being, until WP 2.2.
